About the player
Popescu had never before appeared for the senior side.
He came through the youth ranks first at the Şcoala de Fotbal Gheorghe Popescu academy, then moved into Universitatea Craiova's academy in 2014. A year later he signed his first professional contract with the club and made his first-team debut in the 2015/16 season, playing seven matches in Liga I.
The years that followed took him away from Craiova on a string of loans rather than straight into the first-choice jersey.
Since then his appearances have built up steadily; by May 2026 he had made 124 appearances for Universitatea Craiova's first team.
