About the player
When Cumbayá FC were relegated from Ecuador's top flight in 2024, Melvin Díaz left as a free agent. Liga Deportiva Universitaria signed the forward without paying a transfer fee.
Díaz came through the academy at El Nacional, making his first-team debut in October 2020. When the club was relegated to Serie B the following year, he moved on to América de Quito for half a season before joining Cumbayá in February 2022.
His contract at LDU Quito, signed in March 2025, runs to the end of 2028. He made 14 league appearances and set up one goal in his first season there, plus two outings in the Copa Libertadores. In January 2026 he was loaned to Deportivo Cuenca, taking the number 19 shirt. Díaz finished the season as the club's top scorer in the Ecuadorian league, with two goals from 20 appearances, and added a further goal in six Copa Sudamericana matches.
At international level, Díaz has represented Ecuador's under-23 side once, in a friendly in 2023, without scoring. He has not been called up to the senior national team.
