About the player
Murphy Cooper spent almost his entire early career learning the game away from the spotlight. He started at Caversham AFC before Wycombe Wanderers took him into their academy, and by 2012 Queens Park Rangers had signed him for nothing, keeping him in their youth system for nearly a decade before he turned professional there in 2021.
What followed was a run of loans that took him through the lower reaches of English football. Welling United, Bath City and Stratford Town all had him for spells in 2021 and 2022. The picture changed at Swindon Town in 2023/24, where he made 23 League Two appearances, and then at Stevenage the following season, where he played 37 games in League One and kept a clean sheet in 16 of them.
The 2025/26 season split in two. Barnsley took him on loan first, and he made 21 League One appearances there before Sheffield Wednesday brought him into the Championship in January 2026 for eight further games.
Plymouth Argyle made that investment permanent in the summer of 2026, signing him on a two-year deal worth around £150,000 plus add-ons. He has made a quiet start on the south coast, with two League One appearances and one in the League Cup so far.
