Al-Jazira was formed on 9 March 1974 when Al Khalidiya and Al Bateen merged into one outfit and took a name that simply means "island".
The club belongs to the Al Nahyan family, and the chairman of its sporting company, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, holds the same title at Manchester City. Through the 1980s and 1990s the side bounced between the top flight and the second division; once investment arrived in the 2000s, it settled at the top end of the UAE Pro League instead.
Home matches are played at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, a 37,000-seat ground named after the country's president.
The Pro League has been won three times, in 2011, 2017 and 2021, and the President's Cup the same number of times. A Federation Cup and the GCC Champions League both came in 2007. The League Cup took longer to repeat: a first title in 2010, a second 15 years later in 2025.
