«The King»
The club that plays there began as Al Oruba in 1966. Eight years later it merged with Al Khaleej and took the name Al Sharjah, and in that same 1973–74 season won the league for the first time.
The nickname arrived through the cup rather than the league. Between 1978–79 and 1982–83 the club won the President's Cup four times, including three in a row — and after that it was The King . The cup has stayed the more reliable competition: ten wins in all, the most recent pair in 2021–22 and 2022–23, when the League Cup came in the same season.
The league has been harder. Six titles, and between 1995–96 and 2018–19 there were none at all.
Continental football took longer still. The GCC Champions League came in 1991, but the first Asian trophy only arrived in 2024–25, with the AFC Champions League Two. The Qatar–UAE Super Cup followed in 2026.
What that leaves is the top tier of Asia.
