AO Itabaiana

Two amateur sides, Brasil Football Club and Balípodo Club Santa Cruz, merged in the town of Itabaiana on 10 July 1938, and the club that came out of it has spent the better part of a century as the dominant force in Sergipe football outside the state capital. The Campeonato Sergipano is where that shows: eleven titles, the first in 1969, the most recent in 2023, spread across five decades with no single run explaining the whole tally — the club simply kept turning up in finals whichever generation was on the pitch.

The one outward run at the national stage came in 1971, when Itabaiana won the Zona Norte-Nordeste phase of the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B and reached the final of the Taça Norte-Nordeste, finishing runner-up. Nothing since has matched it for reach, and the club's identity has stayed tied to Sergipe rather than to Série B ambitions.

Home games are played at the Estádio Etelvino Mendonça, known for years under its earlier name, Estádio Presidente Médici. The ground's own supporters are known as torcedores roxos, and the club carries two nicknames drawn from its setting rather than its results: Tremendão da Serra and Tricolor da Serra, both pointing to the hill country around Itabaiana rather than to any single trophy. The red, white and blue kit has stayed the constant through all of it.

No single player or coach from that record has come down as the face of the club in the way a rival's talisman might; what has lasted instead is the shirt and the run of state titles it has collected, one generation of Itabaiana teams handing the habit of winning Sergipe on to the next.
