Araks Ararat

The ground in Ararat holds 1,280 people. The pitch sits in a town. Locals also called the ground Tsement, or Araks.

The club had been there since 1960. Three Armenian Cups in a row, from 1997 to 1999, and in the middle of that run a season nothing else in the club's history comes near: the 1998 double, league and cup together, with the Super Cup added on. Two years later, under the name Araks Ararat, they took a second title.

What followed was quicker than what came before. In 2001 the rights to the club were sold to a sponsor in Yerevan and the team moved to the capital, playing briefly as Araks-Impeks and then as Spartak Yerevan before a merger with Banants ended it altogether. A year later the name was back in Ararat, on a team starting again in the lower division. Money ran out in 2005 and the club stopped.

The one constant across the good years was Tigran Hovhannisyan, who joined in 1993 and stayed until 2000 — 154 matches, 32 goals, and a place in the Armenia squad. He was there for the first cup, the double, and the last title, which is to say he played through the whole of it, from a provincial side in a new league to whatever the club became after Yerevan came calling.
