Karabo Motlhanka has scored more runs for Botswana than anyone else, 1,629 of them. The Baggy Blues he plays for came together under the Botswana Cricket Association, formed on 8 February 1983, but international cricket waited two decades: the first official match was played on 2 September 2002, away to Zambia in Lusaka. ICC affiliate status followed that year, associate status in 2005.
Twenty20 cricket arrived later still. Botswana were handed T20I status in 2019 and opened that account against Uganda on 20 May, losing by 52 runs. The wins came slower — the first arrived in November 2021, against Cameroon and then Mozambique, within days of each other.
The one-day side has had a harder road and is still waiting on its first win at that level. Twenty20 cricket has been kinder: the ACA Africa T20 Cup was won in 2023, added to regional qualifying titles picked up in 2008 and 2018. Matches against Lesotho carry the sharpest edge of any on the calendar.
Home games are staged at the Botswana Cricket Association Oval 1 in Gaborone, a ground that holds 2,000.
