CAP

Patrocínio, in Minas Gerais, has two football clubs, and the rivalry between them is the Patrocínio Derby. Clube Atlético Patrocinense, known as CAP and nicknamed the Eagle (Águia), was set up in 1954 and plays in burgundy and white. Its opponent in that derby is Sociedade Esportiva Patrocinense.

For most of its life CAP played in the lower divisions of the state. It finished runner-up in the Segunda Divisão in 1990 and won it in 2000. The stretch that mattered most came in the early 1990s, when the club reached the top tier of the Campeonato Mineiro, the Módulo I, and stayed there until 1994. Ademir, who began his senior career at CAP, later played for América-MG, Atlético-MG and Bahia.

Debt ended it in 2005. The club folded a year after another Segunda Divisão runner-up finish, and it stayed out of professional football until 2016. The return was quick: in 2017 CAP won the Campeonato Mineiro Módulo II. The regional Copa Amapar, won in 2009 and 2011, belongs to the years before the collapse.

The 2024 squad included the attacking midfielder Matheus Cassini, who holds Italian citizenship, and the veteran forward Thiago Ribeiro. The same year the Federal Police opened Operation Jogo Limpo, an investigation into alleged match-fixing that involved the club. The Estádio Pedro Alves do Nascimento holds 8,500 and is where CAP has to keep its name clear.
