The better years came earlier. Democrata finished runner-up in the top division of the state championship three times in nine seasons, in 1955, 1957 and 1963, and has not been that close since. A smaller piece of silverware sits between the eras: the Torneio Início of 2006, a knockout curtain-raiser rather than a league.
The club was formed on 14 June 1914 in Sete Lagoas, and the first kit ordered that year had vertical red and white stripes. Neither has the nickname the cartoonist Mangabeira gave the club — Jacaré , the alligator — which the supporters shorten to Demo and which the ground now carries as well. In November 2015 the municipality listed Democrata as part of its cultural heritage.
