Dudley Redhead United

The Thistles spent 2024 sweeping the Newcastle Zone Football League One: First Grade, Reserve Grade and Third Grade all took premierships, and the club was named Zone League One Club Champion for the year. That form carried Dudley Redhead United into HIT106.9 Northern League One, where the senior side now plays its home fixtures at Lydon Oval in Dudley.

The ground holds 450, and the bank above the pitch carries a name rather than a sponsor: the 'Spider' Jones Cup hill, after Peter 'Spider' Jones, a coal miner who played more than 400 games for the club. The junior and community sides play a few minutes down the road at Liles Oval in Redhead, three coastal suburbs, Dudley, Redhead and Whitebridge, feeding one set of red and white shirts.

The club dates its founding to 1896. What happened between then and the State League titles of 1999 and 2002 is thinly recorded, but those two finals are not: Budgewoi beaten 4–0, then Toronto Awaba by a single goal three years later. Before and after came the near misses — four runner-up finishes, the last of them in 2006, decided 1–0 by Beresfield United.

The name that travels furthest belongs to Emily van Egmond, who began as a junior here before debuting for the Newcastle Jets at 15 and going on to the NWSL and the Matildas. Clare Wheeler came through the same pathway.

The fixtures that matter most locally are against Wallsend FC and South Cardiff FC — neighbours in the same corner of the Hunter, with no derby title attached to either. South Cardiff have the older grievance in their favour: they beat Dudley Redhead 3–2 in the 1996 State League Grand Final.
