«Hampshire Hawks»
The county had cricket long before it had a club to organise it — on 12 August 1863, a formal body was established.
The one-day game suited Hampshire better than most. Five limited-overs titles between 1991 and 2018, three T20 Blast wins, and a clutch of Sunday League and Benson & Hedges Cup successes gave the Hawks — the nickname carried specifically by the white-ball teams — a reputation as a side built for the shorter formats. Phil Mead remains the club's leading run-scorer across a career spent almost entirely in the first half of the twentieth century, and Derek Shackleton's wicket-taking record has stood since the era of uncovered pitches.
Hampshire left the old County Ground for what is now the Utilita Bowl in 2001, a purpose-built venue in West End that seats 15,000 and can be extended to 25,000 for internationals. Against Sussex, the fixture is billed as the South Coast derby. In 2024 the club changed hands entirely: the Delhi Capitals franchise bought Hampshire for £120 million, tying a county formed to give Southampton cricket a proper structure to a franchise built for Twenty20 in another country altogether.
