The club was put together in 2013, its name settled that August on the Miyajima Dragonfly, a species native to nearby Itsukushima Island and taken locally as a mark of jumping ability and luck. Kenichi Sako took the first head coach's job, Nobuaki Ito the presidency, and Keiji Shimizu led the founding group that got the operation off the ground. Two seasons in the National Basketball League preceded the move into the B.League in 2016.

They play at the Hiroshima Sun Plaza, a hall that opened in 1985 and was renovated in 2011, holding 6,052 for basketball.

Then, in 2024, Hiroshima won the B.League B1 Championship outright, beating the Ryukyu Golden Kings 2-1 in the finals under head coach Kyle Milling, who took the league's Coach of the Year award for it. The following March they added the East Asia Super League title, edging the Taoyuan Pauian Pilots 72-68.

Dwayne Evans II carried both of those finals: Finals MVP in the 2024 championship run, then EASL MVP in Macau the following spring.
