Luxembourg Women

There is no ground here that belongs to the side, only whichever pitch in Luxembourg happens to be free that week — the Stade de Luxembourg among them, though the national side has played there just twice, against England and Austria during 2023 World Cup qualifying. Most nights it is somewhere smaller, whichever venue the fixture calendar hands them.

The federation put a team together in 2003, but it took three years to find an opponent: the first international came on 18 November 2006, in Junglinster, a 0–4 defeat to Slovakia. Neither the World Cup nor the European Championship has followed since. The closest the side has come to either was in qualifying for Euro 2009, when it finished second in its group, behind Slovakia again.

Results since have swung wide in both directions — an 11–0 win over Tahiti in 2022, an 8–0 defeat to Sweden two years later. The Nations League has given the team its clearest marker of progress: promotion into League B for the 2024/25 season, under Daniel Santos, who lasted until March 2026, when the federation dismissed him after players complained about inappropriate messages.

Amy Thompson carries the team's scoring record, 35 goals from 56 caps. It is still a young enough history that a record like hers is unlikely to be troubled soon — the side she plays for has been assembling opponents, one friendly and one qualifier at a time, since a coach in Junglinster first wrote its name on a team sheet in 2006.
