«Les Verts»
Villeurbanne sits pressed against Lyon's eastern edge. The club that carries its name grew out of a 1948 merger of two multi-sport societies, Association Sportive Villeurbannoise and Éveil Lyonnais, and the joined initials gave the new club its acronym, ASVEL.
What followed put ASVEL ahead of every other club in French basketball. Twenty-one national championships came across seven decades, from the first in 1949 through to 2022, alongside ten French Cups and a run to the EuroLeague Final Four in 1996-97.
The rivalry that matters most now is with AS Monaco, contested as "Le Classique," though older Villeurbanne supporters still measure the club against Limoges and Pau-Orthez from decades when those names carried the league. Ownership today runs through Infinity Nine Sports, the group founded by Tony Parker, who serves as club president.
The academy that trains the next generation of players is named after him.
