Olympiacos Piraeus

Panathinaikos is the opponent that gives Olympiacos its calendar rhythm: the Athens-Piraeus fixture is billed as the "Derby of the Eternal Enemies," and in 2018-19 the rivalry cost the club a season in the top flight, after Olympiacos refused to play a game against Panathinaikos over refereeing disputes and was relegated. The club returned to the Greek top division in 2020 and has not needed reminding of the stakes since.

The basketball section dates to 1931, six years after the founding of the parent club, and has spent the intervening decades collecting silverware in bursts. The clearest of those came in 1997, when Olympiacos took the EuroLeague, the Greek Championship and the Greek Cup in the same season, the first Greek club to complete that treble. Fifteen years later it did something no other Greek club has managed: back-to-back EuroLeague titles, in 2012 and 2013, each won from a position that should have ended the tie. Down nineteen points to CSKA Moscow in the 2012 final, they came back to win it; a year later they erased seventeen against Real Madrid the same way.

The Peace and Friendship Stadium has been the club's home for that history, though the building is currently being rebuilt and the team plays for now at the SUNEL Arena, with a return to Piraeus expected in early 2027.

Of the players who put their name to those finals, Georgios Printezis is the one supporters bring up first: it was his shot that won the 2012 title in the final seconds. Vassilis Spanoulis carried the Final Four that same year as its MVP, but it is Printezis's shot that Piraeus still talks about.
