Bethany Balcer wore Grand Rapids FC's shirt in 2017, the year the team won the United Women's Soccer national championship; she went on to Seattle Reign and the United States national team. She was not the only one from that squad to move on — Maddie Pogarcic later played for Portland Thorns, San Diego Wave and Sweden's Hammarby, and Riley Tanner, who joined a few years after the title, ended up at Washington Spirit before turning out for Panama.

The club that fielded them traces back to 1990, when it began in Grand Rapids as the Grand Rapids Area Soccer Association. A 2007 merger with Grand Valley Premier SC turned it into Grand Rapids Crew Juniors, an academy tied to Columbus Crew of MLS, and in June 2015 it took the name Midwest United FC. The women's side, then still called Grand Rapids FC, came under that name in 2019.

The 2017 championship came with a conference title, matched again in 2021. The club won the conference playoffs three times, in 2017, 2018 and 2021, and added the UWS Stadium Showcase in 2020.

Since 2022 the team has played in the USL W League's Great Lakes division, without a league title so far, finishing second in its first season there. Detroit City FC Women's coach has called the meetings between the two clubs a rivalry.

Home games are played at Aquinas College, in royal blue meant to recall the Grand River, and white. The ground holds 1,500.
