Politechnika Opolska

Weegree AZS Politechnika Opolska plays Pogoń Prudnik twice a season, and the fixture goes by its own name in the region, the Derby Opolszczyzny — a match neither side needs a table position to care about.

The basketball section belongs to the university sports club AZS Politechnika Opolska, registered in 2008, and everyone around the team calls it Akademicy, the Academics, a name that gives away where the players come from before anyone explains it. They play in white and blue at the Stegu Arena on ulica Sosnowskiego that older residents of Opole still call by its previous name, the Okrąglak.

Promotion to the I Liga came for the 2019/2020 season, after Opole lost the II Liga final to Politechnika Gdańska the year before — a defeat that sent both clubs up regardless. The season that followed gave them little time to settle: a 13th-place finish, then the early shutdown of the league because of the pandemic, which is the only reason they stayed up. The club's best run came later, in 2021/2022, when they beat GKS Tychy in the quarter-finals before Rawlplug Sokół Łańcut ended their play-offs in the semi-final, three games to none. Marcin Grygowicz, who had won two Polish championships as a player with Śląsk Wrocław, coached the side through that campaign. A year on, in 2022/2023, they reached the quarter-finals again.

None of it has brought a national title to Opole. What it has brought is a fixture against Prudnik that the club was already playing, in some form, long before either side had anything else worth mentioning.
