Two municipal clubs on opposite sides of the Birs stood too small on their own: BC Arlesheim and CVJM Birsfelden merged in 2002 to form a side, and the name they settled on, Starwings, took its stars from Birsfelden's coat of arms and its wings from Arlesheim's. The club played its early years as Birstal Starwings before adopting Starwings Basket Regio Basel in 2008.

It has never won the Swiss championship, and its closest brushes with the title: third place in 2007 and 2008, then a run to the 2021 Swiss Basketball League final, lost to Fribourg Olympic. The Swiss Cup is a different matter. CVJM Birsfelden lifted it in 1969, and the club added a second in 2010 against SAV Vacallo Basket.
