Richmond United Women

In the Hollywoodbets Super League, Richmond United Women are still measured against opponents from South Africa's biggest cities, and De Aar's own side keeps turning up regardless of the gap in resources. The 2019–20 campaign, the league's first, ended with an 11th-place finish out of twelve, a result that says more about the distance still to close than about any given weekend.

The club did not start out in De Aar at all. It was formed in Richmond, in the Northern Cape, and only later moved its base to the larger town nearby, carrying the name with it. For years there was no ground to speak of locally, and the team travelled to Kimberley to play its home fixtures at the Sol Plaatje University Sports Precinct. That changed in 2021, when the Merino Park Multi-Sports Complex opened in De Aar, giving the club a 200-seat home of its own for the first time.

Before the Super League swallowed up their attention, Richmond United Ladies made their name provincially. In 2018 they won the Northern Cape Sasol Women's League, a title that carried them through to the Sasol League National Championship — a tournament they had already sampled two years earlier, in 2016, when they finished 9th. Red is the colour they have always played in, and it gave rise to the nickname "The Red Army," a name De Aar has made its own even though a Pretoria side wears it too.
