Mežaparks Sports Village is a training complex rather than a stadium: 1,500 places, no tiers, the kind of ground where the touchline conversation carries to the back row. Riga Mariners have made it home while chasing something bigger than the ground can hold.

The club has been playing since 2008, though under a different name for most of that time — FK Beitar. The change came in stages: a hyphenated season in 2024, then the Mariners brand alone from 2025. Behind it stands Marine Insurance Services SIA and its owner, Aleksandrs Abuzarovs, who also runs the Riga FC academy — a connection that draws steady criticism, and one reason meetings with Riga FC carry an edge they would not otherwise have.

The 2025 season was the closest they have come. Third in 1. līga with 58 points, in a promotion race that turned on the fixtures against Ogre United. Algirdas Gražys scored 19 of the club's goals that year, the leading return in the squad under Sergejs Kožans. The same season brought the Latvian Cup last 16 and a 0-10 defeat by Riga FC, which is the gap between the second tier and the top of the Latvian game set out without commentary.

Elvis Stuglis, a centre-back with Latvia caps behind him, arrived as part of the push to make the squad look like a Virslīga side before it had earned the right to be one. Stefano Greco took over as head coach in April 2026, with the club fourth in the table.

No trophies. Blue and white, a ground in the woods, and a queue of clubs ahead of them in a league that promotes one.
