Valmiera / BSS

Home matches are played at the Jāņa Daliņa stadions, a ground built for 1,250 people — a size that keeps the black and green of Valmiera's own coat of arms visible from every seat rather than lost in an empty stand.

The club now known as Valmiera FK/BSS traces back to Gauja Valmiera, a team that had been playing since 1978, before the current organisation was formally registered on 29 February 1996. The BSS in the name belongs to the town's children's sports school, and the club took its present shape in 2010, when a merger with Gauja and Vārpa fixed both the name and the structure still in place today: an entity distinct on paper from Valmiera FC, though sharing its ground, badge and history, and competing one tier below in the 1. līga. That distinction became more than paperwork in 2025, when Valmiera FC was stripped of its Virslīga licence over unpaid debts and fell out of the top flight.

Before that, Valmiera had climbed the other way. Promotion came in 2017, ending a 14-year wait for top-flight football, and the club went on to win the Virslīga in 2022 — its only league title. Two Latvian Cup semi-finals, in 2020 and 2021, did not turn into silverware.

Talent has tended to move on quickly once it arrives. Tolu Arokodare left for Genk and later Wolverhampton Wanderers; Raimonds Krollis, top scorer in that 2022 title season, was sold to Spezia; Camilo Mena, voted the club's best player in 2023, went on to Lechia Gdańsk.

Auda are the closest rivals, the name Valmiera reach for first when a result matters most, while FC RFS and Riga FC are the clubs standing between Valmiera and a second Virslīga title.
