Ruggell II

Ruggell sits at the northern tip of Liechtenstein, where the Rhine plain flattens out and the country runs out of room.

FC Ruggell II is the second team inside that arrangement, sharing the Widau pitches with the first eleven and carrying no founding date of its own.

What the reserves do have is the cup. In Liechtenstein the national cup takes in second teams as well as first, so a side like this one meets senior opposition on a regular basis — and Ruggell's reserves have made a habit of going further in it than reserve sides usually do.

The first team's own record there is the club's long-running sore point. Seven finals — 1963, 1973, 1978, 1981, 2001, 2007, 2019 — and not one of them won.

The Swiss campaigns have gone better. Ruggell won the 3. Liga in 1985 and again in 2016, with four 4. Liga titles behind those. The sides drew 1-1 in November 2024.

Several Liechtenstein internationals came through the club's youth ranks — Martin Büchel among them, later of FC Zürich — though their senior football was played elsewhere. The trophy the club has been chasing since 1963 is still not in the cabinet.
