Estádio Francisco Novelletto Neto sits in the Passo D'Areia district of Porto Alegre and holds around 10,600, a size that suits a club whose senior side has spent its history below the state's top table. Locally the ground goes by the neighbourhood's own name, Passo d'Areia.

Blue, yellow and white are its colours today, though the shirt has not always matched: spells in black and white, and later red and white under sponsorship, sit in its wardrobe as well.

Two Campeonato Gaúcho second-division titles, in 1963 and 1981, are the only silverware the senior team has to show; the first division has never been won. The under-20 side has followed a similar pattern of near misses rather than triumphs, reaching the final of the Campeonato Gaúcho Sub-20 in 2014 before losing to Grêmio.

Ênio Andrade started out at São José in 1949 before building a coaching career elsewhere.

Derby day means Cruzeiro, and the fixture is known simply as Zé-Cruz.

10,600 is the number the ground holds — modest by Porto Alegre standards, and enough.
