Youth football at Internacional grew out of the same club the Poppe brothers put together in 1909, long before anyone in Porto Alegre thought to formalise an under-20 age group. For decades the setup was simply called "Juvenil" or "Júnior"; it only took the name Sub-20 once the Brazilian federation created a dedicated national championship for that age bracket in 2006. The academy itself runs out of the CT Celeiro de Ases in Alvorada — "Nursery of Aces" — a name that has matched what has come out of it: Falcão and Cláudio Taffarel passed through it.

The Sub-20 side has since added two more Brazilian titles, in 2013 and 2021, plus a Copa do Brasil Sub-20 in 2014.

None of it carries the weight of what the senior team built with the same red and white shirt — two Copa Libertadores, a Club World Cup, a run of Copa do Brasil wins stretching to 2021.
