Games in the youth categories are played at the Cidade do Galo training centre, out in Vespasiano on the edge of Belo Horizonte. It sits apart from the arenas the senior side fills, the Mineirão and the newer Arena MRV.

The academy dates back to the club itself, founded on 25 March 1908 in Belo Horizonte under the name Athletico Mineiro Foot-Ball Club, later shortened to Clube Atlético Mineiro in 1913. The Sub-20 side carries the same black-and-white stripes and the same nickname, Galo . He joined the academy in 2006, broke into the senior squad in 2011, lifted the Copa Libertadores with Atlético in 2013, then spent years at Shakhtar Donetsk and Everton before returning to Belo Horizonte in 2024 — the same club that raised him.

In 2025 the side reached the semi-finals of the Brasileiro Sub-20 Série B, finishing third and earning promotion to Série A without taking the title itself.
