Belo Horizonte was laid out as a planned capital for Minas Gerais, and football arrived in it early enough. América won both in each year from 1916 to 1925.
The club took its shape in 1912, and the black in its green-and-white came a year later, when it absorbed Minas Gerais Futebol Clube.
What happened afterwards is a longer and rougher story. In 1973, money problems forced the club to sell its ground to the Pão de Açúcar retail group. Relegation from Série B to Série C in 2004, then last place in the Campeonato Mineiro in 2007, which dropped América into the second division of its own state.
Home since 2012 has been the Estádio Independência, formally the Estádio Otacílio Negrão de Lima and widely called the Arena Independência, with room for 23,018.
The nickname is Coelho — the Rabbit — and it is the name that travels furthest.
