Strabane Athletic

Strabane Athletic have no fixed old enemy. Limavady United and Institute FC turn up most often on the fixture list, but both name each other as their derby, not the club from Strabane — a result of how fast Strabane Athletic have moved through the leagues since 2010, rarely staying in one company long enough for a rivalry to set. That changed, briefly, in May 2026, when Strabane Athletic met Limavady United in the final of the North West Senior Cup and won 3-2 — the club's first senior trophy.

The club formed after Strabane and Sion Swifts United folded, taking their place in the Northern Ireland Intermediate League for the 2012/13 season. The early years read like a ladder: the Fermanagh & Western Division Three title in 2010, Division Two in 2011, then the Intermediate League itself in 2018. A league reorganisation moved them into the Ballymena & Provincial Football League, which they won in both 2023 and 2024, adding the O'Gorman and Crawford cups in 2024 as well. A play-off win over Crewe United sent them up into the NIFL Premier Intermediate League in 2024/25; a second-place finish there in 2025/26 promoted them again, into the NIFL Championship — the first Strabane club to reach senior football.

Rory Patterson was player-manager between 2021 and 2023. He arrived with Northern Ireland caps and spells at Coleraine, FC United of Manchester, Derry City, Crusaders and Plymouth Argyle already behind him rather than having built that career at Strabane. Home games are played at the Melvin Sports Arena on Melvin Road, which holds around 1,500. The shirts are sky blue and white, the source of the club's other name, the Blues, alongside the shorter SAFC.

Strabane Athletic go into their first season in the Championship holding a senior cup they did not have twelve months earlier.
