Trabzonspor

Trabzonspor already had a football side and a multi-sport club dating back to 1967. It had no basketball team until it bought the rights of a smaller outfit, Alpella Spor Kulübü, which gave it a place in the Turkish Second Division for 2008–09.

The climb was quick. Second Division titles followed in 2009–10 and 2012–13, and the second one led to the top flight. In 2014–15, playing as Trabzonspor Medical Park under Nenad Marković, the team reached the final of the FIBA EuroChallenge. Dwight Hardy, Novica Veličković and Dee Bost were the players on that run.

The money ran out three years later. In October 2018 the club left the Basketbol Süper Ligi (BSL) after unpaid salaries and FIBA transfer bans piled up, and professional basketball in Trabzon stopped. It stayed stopped until February 2024, when Club President Ertuğrul Doğan brought the section back.

The restart was in the lowest tier, so the team had to climb again. It won the Second Division and then the Turkish Basketball First League. The second title was clinched on 13 April 2025, and it sent Trabzonspor back to the BSL for 2025–26. In the top flight the fixtures include Fenerbahçe, whom Turkish basketball calls "eternal rivals" of the Burgundy-Blues, and Anadolu Efes, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş, and the team now plays them at the 7,500-seat Hayri Gür Arena.
