Undy Athletic

Undy Athletic start this season in the Ardal South East League, the fourth tier of Welsh football, after results in 2021–22 sent them down from Cymru South — a division they had helped found only two seasons before.

The club has come apart before. Formed in the Monmouthshire village of Undy in 1947, it folded in 1962 and stayed dormant until 1970, when it returned under the name Undy United before reverting to Undy Athletic. In the years before that first collapse, the club took the Argus Cup three times, though the exact seasons have not survived in the record.

The climb back up the pyramid took shape in successive seasons either side of 2011: the Gwent County League Division One title in 2010–11, then Welsh Football League Division Three in 2011–12, promotion that carried Undy into the Welsh Football League proper and, eventually, into Cymru South.

Home games are played at The Causeway, also known as Undy Playing Fields, which holds 3,000 with 250 of those seated. The red shirts and black shorts date only to the 1990s — the club wore black and white at its founding in 1947 — while the away kit is yellow with black shorts. Local press still frames the fixture with Cwmbran Celtic, the closest thing Undy have to a settled derby, simply as the "big derby."

Few names travel further from Undy than Jamie Coombes, who spent the 2017–18 season with the club before going on to play international football for Gibraltar.
