Uruguay Women

Montevideo waited twenty-four years to see this side again at the Centenario. Uruguay's women played their first official match in March 1998, away to Paraguay, and it was not until June 2021 that the national stadium hosted them itself.

The federation put the side together in 1996, a decade after the Amateur Women's Football Association had already run its own competitions, and further back than that lies a single, isolated fixture against Argentina in 1962. What exists now dates from 1996 and has stayed modest since.

Aída Camaño has earned more caps than anyone else who has worn the sky blue, a record built up match by match over years in which the side had little to show for its effort on the scoreboard. That changed, at least for a run of games, in 2025: a semi-final at the Copa América Femenina, the first time Uruguay had gone that far in the tournament's history.

Home matches now return to the Estadio Centenario, a stadium usually associated with the men's team's own history. For a side that spent most of its existence playing away from it, the stadium is no longer just Montevideo's landmark — it is, finally, also theirs.
