Atlético Atlas

Atlas started somewhere else entirely, put together in 1951 by a group of sportsmen from the Villa Crespo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, calling itself Club Social y Deportivo Atlas before the name settled into its current form in 1960. It joined the Argentine Football Association in 1964, feeding into the amateur ranks that are now Primera D, and only moved out to General Rodríguez in 1970 — where it built the ground it still plays on, Estadio Ricardo Puga, holding 2,500.

The club has gone in and out of the AFA pyramid more than once, stepping away and rejoining in 1965, 2005, 2011 and 2021 as relegations pushed it back into amateur football. What travelled with the club through all of that was a nickname, Marrón, taken from the brown-and-white shirt, and a documentary crew that turned Atlas into something bigger than its results. Atlas, la otra pasión ran from 2006 to 2017 and made a minor celebrity of Wilson Severino, a former railway worker who ended up the club's all-time top scorer with 109 goals before finishing his playing days with River Plate's veterans side.

The coaching thread through the club's better years is Néstor Retamar, in and out of the job across four spells between 2005 and 2022, the man in charge when Atlas beat Deportivo Paraguayo 2-0 in the 2020-21 Torneo Reducido final to climb out of Primera D into Primera C — the first promotion of its kind in the club's history. That rise is where Atlas stands now, back in the professional pyramid it has left and re-entered so many times before, still measuring itself first against the neighbours across town.
