Germán Ezequiel Cano Recalde

Germán Cano spent years scoring goals in places few people in Europe were watching. He came through the youth system at Lanús and made his senior debut there in 2007. Instead, a free transfer to Independiente Medellín in 2012 turned into the making of him: across two spells there, either side of a stint at Pachuca and a loan at León in Mexico, he became the club's all-time top scorer with 129 goals.

A free transfer took him to Vasco da Gama in Brazil, where he scored 43 goals in 101 appearances. He finished as top scorer of the 2022 Brasileirão with 26 goals, was awarded the Bola de Prata and named to the Team of the Year. The following year brought the Copa Libertadores, with Cano scoring 13 goals in the competition as Fluminense won the title, and he added the Recopa Sudamericana in 2024 along with two Campeonato Carioca titles. In 2023 he was named South American Footballer of the Year and included in the IFFHS Men's CONMEBOL Team.

Despite all of it, Cano has never played for Argentina's senior national team. He has said he simply never received a call-up, including under Lionel Scaloni.
