Alisa Ufa Women

School No. 88 in Ufa began putting girls through handball drills in 1986, when coaches Aleksandr Saqaev and Oleg Uskov set the programme up, and by 1989 it had grown into its own sports school, SShOR-13. The team it produced started playing the Russian First League in 1995 and has carried the city's handball name through several legal shells since, most durably as Ufa-Alisa.

Promotion arrived in 2004, when the club took the Russian Higher League, the country's second tier, and moved up into the Super League, where it has stayed since without adding a national title. Bronze medals in the Higher League followed later, three of them, in a run generally placed around 2017 to 2019.

The club now plays home games at the Sports Center Astra on Rostovskaya Street, a step up from the FOK Priozerny hall it used after returning to the top flight in 2015. Orange and black kits and a fox mascot go back to the Alisa years, and the badge still in use actually belongs to Akbuzat, the former men's club Ufa's handball side absorbed in 2022 before this year's rebrand to Bashkiria. Astrakhanochka and Lada Tolyatti remain the sides Ufa measures itself against in the Super League table.

Few names carry more weight in the city's handball story than Viktoria Zhilinskajte, who came up through the Ufa system before winning Olympic gold in 2016.
