Karlovac is a city that handball took hold of long before its current club existed. HRK Karlovac came together in 1991, when two local sides, Jugoturbine and Dubovac, merged into one. Jugoturbine had been the stronger of the pair, the most successful handball name the city had produced, and its record effectively became the foundation the new club built on.

The club has never taken the Croatian title, but three times it came close in the cup, reaching the final of the Kup Hrvatske and losing it in 1995, 1997 and 2007. That gap between reaching a final and winning one has defined much of Karlovac's competitive history more than any single trophy would have.
