«Flying Bears»
Handball reached Čakovec in 1930, under the name Hazena, and by 1949 the game had settled into a permanent club called Jedinstvo. Over the decades that followed, the side changed its name again and again — RK Čakovec, RK Zrinski Čakovec, RK Perutnina Pipo IPC — while playing in the Croatian Premier League and in European cups. When that lineage folded, a new club, MRK Čakovec, rose in its place in 2013, taking up the same blue, white and red colours its predecessors had worn.
The Croatian Cup came once, in 1983, under one of the earlier names, and it stands as the club's only national trophy; the league title itself has gone to RK Zagreb every year since 1992, leaving Čakovec's various incarnations always short of it. In Europe, a second-round finish in the EHF Cup Winners' Cup in 2008-09, and the third round of the Challenge Cup reached twice, in 2007-08 and again in 2010-11.
Since the 2013 refounding, the club has had to climb back up through the regional tiers, picking up the 1. HRL – Sjever, 2. HRL – Sjever and 3. HRL – Sjever titles along the way. That climb came with a new identity too: the team is now known to its own supporters as the Flying Bears, a name carried online under the hashtag #letećimedvjedi.
None of it is felt as sharply as the fixture with RK Varaždin. The two towns sit close enough that the game needs no other name than the neighborly derby.
