«The Orange Ones»
Vinkovci sits in eastern Slavonia, and its handball club has spent most of its life under other names before settling on the one it carries now. RK Spačva Vinkovci began in 1950 as RK Lokomotiva Vinkovci, then passed through RK Croatia and RK Novoselac before the Spačva name arrived in 2004.
The team's own rise came later. Second place in the First Croatian Handball League in the 2010/11 season took the club into the Premijer liga, and it has stayed there since 2011/12 — still described locally as the greatest moment in the city's handball history. A Croatian Handball Cup bronze followed in 2024, and two appearances in the EHF European League, in 2020/21 and 2024/25, have given Vinkovci a taste of continental competition; the first ended at the hands of the Macedonian side RK Metalurg Skopje.
Matches are played at the Bartol Kašić Elementary School hall, a modest 800-seat venue in keeping with a club that built its base from the ground up: a handball school set up in 2012 now carries around 200 children through eight age categories, the pipeline the senior side draws on. Locally the players are known as Narančasti — the Orange Ones — a nickname rooted in the home shirts, even as the club's listed colours are green and white.
Vinkovci has no city rival to speak of; RK Spačva is the only senior handball club there. Its rivalries run regional instead, against RK Osijek and RK Nexe Našice in what is called the Slavonian derby, and against RK Đakovo in a closer neighbourhood contest — the matches that carry the weight a local derby would elsewhere.
