Metkovci is what people here call the club that grew out of handball.

The name has moved more than once — the club started life as RK Mehanika in 1963 and later carried the Razvitak and Jambo tags — but Mehanika still gets used as a second nickname, a reminder of where it began.

The turn of the millennium was the club's high point. RK Metković won the EHF Cup in 1999–2000, then lost the following year's final, and took the Croatian Cup in both 2000–01 and 2001–02.

RK Zagreb has been the club's measure throughout.
