Karpaty Uzhhorod Women

Uzhhorod sits at Ukraine's western edge, close enough to Slovakia and Hungary that handball there has always looked across two borders as much as toward Kyiv, and for decades the city's team has carried that regional identity under the name Karpaty. The club itself started somewhere else: it was formed in 1969 in Berehove as Spartak, built around a local youth sports school, and only became Karpaty after the move to Uzhhorod twenty years later.

What followed was a run of finishes that reads almost like a habit. Between 2012 and 2014 Karpaty won three straight Ukrainian Superleague titles, then spent the years after settling into the role of nearly-champions, taking silver again and again — 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2025 — a pattern broken by a Ukrainian Cup win in 2018. Players such as Iryna Kompaniyets and Daryna Kot carried that title-winning side, the core of a team that also gave the club its only real taste of continental competition, a Round of 16 finish in the EHF Challenge Cup in 2016–17.

None of that history means much in Uzhhorod without HC Galychanka Lviv on the other side of it. Games between the two are still called the main derby of Ukrainian women's handball, the one weekend where the league table goes out of the window and past finishes, including all those silvers, stop mattering.

Home matches are played in front of no more than 800 people at SK Yunost, a small enough hall that a Karpaty–Galychanka derby fills it the way bigger arenas rarely get filled elsewhere in the domestic game.
