Oleksandr Aliyev arrived at Rukh after his years at Dynamo Kyiv had run their course. It had started in 2003 in Vynnyky, on the edge of Lviv, as a children's football school, and only in 2009 did an adult side take shape. For a decade it stayed a regional concern, collecting Lviv Oblast titles through the early 2010s and winning the Ukrainian Amateur League in 2014. What changed things was Hryhoriy Kozlovskyi's takeover and the 2019 move into Lviv itself, where the club took the name FC Rukh Lviv. Promotion followed fast: runners-up in the Second League in 2016–17, then in the First League in 2019–20, which took Rukh into the Ukrainian Premier League for the first time.

Skif Stadium holds fewer than 4,000, so the bigger occasions move to Arena Lviv instead. The yellow and black colours, only adopted in 2017, mark how recent this version of the club is against how far it has already travelled.

Rukh has kept faith with its own academy rather than buying its way up the table; graduates like Andriy Stolyarchuk have made that visible on the pitch, with players under 21 accounting for a large share of the minutes played. That approach has done little to soften the derby with Karpaty Lviv and FC Lviv, matches where an older city club and its recent arrival from the suburbs measure themselves against each other.
