Jablonec beat Baník Ostrava 3-0 at the Střelnice stadium on Wednesday evening in the Czech League's fifth round of the regular season. The home side took all three points from a match where the turning point came early, and by then the visitors were already playing catch-up.
It was the 44th minute when Filip Novák finally broke the deadlock, and to be fair the game had been building toward that moment. A VAR-awarded goal for Matej Chalus at 38 minutes had been cancelled, which shifted something in the room. Five minutes later Chalus saw red, and suddenly Baník were defending with a man down.
Antonín Růsek doubled the lead at 55 minutes while the visitors were still sorting themselves out after the dismissal. Then came the third goal in the 70th minute, this time through Matej Polidar — though another VAR check at 73 minutes cancelled that one too, so the final scoreline was already set before the whistle.
Jablonec controlled things from the touchline. They registered 58 per cent possession, created five big chances compared to Baník's one, and their shots on target came seven to two. The visitors managed only two shots on target from 18 attempts, and when you ground out a win like that it matters that you were clinical.
The substitutions came thick and fast after the half-hour mark. Baník brought on Daniel Holzer, Vaclav Jurecka and Filip Kubala all at 62 minutes, then tried to reshuffle again at 73 with Dominik Holly and Saidou Alioum Moubarak. Jablonec made their changes later, bringing on Filip Novák and Richard Sedláček at 81 minutes.
It's worth noting the context. Jablonec sit seventh with 10 points from six games, three wins and a draw, while Baník are 11th on nine points with three defeats. The hosts had lost their last meeting with Slovan Liberec 2-1, and Baník had been hammered 4-0 by Mladá Boleslav on their previous outing.
What stood out was the gap in territorial dominance. Jablonec completed 437 passes in the opposition half compared to Baník's 219, and they made 121 passes into the final third against 67. The visitors' goalkeeper had to make four saves, while Jablonec's keeper managed two. The result keeps the home side within touching distance of the teams above them.
