To be fair, you can see why the home crowd felt confident coming into this one. Victoriaville had rattled off some heavy scoring in recent outings — an 8:7 thriller against Drummondville and a 4:0 shutout of Shawinigan — before losing three of their last four. They came out swinging, and by then the game had already started tilting.
We had called for the visitors to come away with something, and the 47 per cent confidence we placed on Sherbrooke held up. It wasn't a blowout, and the Tigres certainly didn't let the game flow as easily as the scoreboard suggests, but the Phoenix found a way through when it mattered.
The standings tell a simple story at this stage. Victoriaville sit eighth after six matches with two wins and four defeats, while Sherbrooke sit two points clear in second with four victories from seven outings. Neither team has played enough to make the table mean much, but the gap is already visible.
Recent form cuts both ways. The Tigres had won three of their last five before this loss, including that emphatic 4:0, but they also dropped 2:5 away to Shawinigan and 3:4 at home to Val-d'Or. The result keeps the Phoenix in the hunter's position early on. Victoriaville now have a game in hand and a chance to close the gap, but they will need to tighten up defensively if they want to turn those high-scoring affairs into something more sustainable.
