Cherkas: Fans Stopped Following Ovechkin's Gretzky Goals Chase

Sergei Cherkas, an Honoured Coach of Russia, believes the chase of Wayne Gretzky's NHL goals record has slipped out of daily view because of the volume of coverage. Gretzky leads with 1,016 goals when the playoffs are counted. Alexander Ovechkin, captain of the Washington Capitals, has 1,006.

"The press, the fans and the rest of the media are paying a great deal of attention to Ovechkin's record. In world hockey there are very few like Ovechkin, and even fewer whom the public follows," Cherkas said. "I think that, because of such an abundance of information in the media, people have, perhaps, stopped following this record every day."

The gap is 10 goals.
