The trophy that mattered most came in 2025, and it came from the bottom. Ponte Preta had spent the previous year in freefall, sliding through the divisions amid a financial crisis and unpaid wages until it landed in Série C, Brazilian football's third tier. It earned promotion back to Série B the same year it had been forced into the drop.

That pattern of falling and climbing again runs through the club's history. Founded on 11 August 1900 by students at the Culto à Ciência college in Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, the side took its name from a black wooden railway bridge near where its founders used to meet. The nickname Macaca began life as a racial slur aimed at the club; supporters reclaimed it, and it has stuck.

The closest the club has come to continental silverware was in 2013, when it reached the final of the Copa Sul-Americana and lost to Argentina's Lanús. Emerson Royal came through the academy before moves to Tottenham and Milan.
