Atlético Torque Claim Late Victory Over Cerro-Largo
Atlético Torque beat Cerro-Largo 2:1 at Estadio Charroua on Thursday evening in the fifth round of the Primera División — Apertura. The home side took the lead in the 88th minute through Esteban Obregon after a late equaliser from Neilton da Silva had cancelled out Santiago Marcel's opener. The result moves Atlético Torque closer to the top four while Cerro-Largo remain in tenth place.
Cerro-Largo started brighter and took the lead in the 41st minute when Santiago Marcel finished from inside the box. Atlético Torque made a double change at half-time, bringing on Gonzalo Montes for Franco Pizzichillo as they looked to respond. The visitors extended their advantage briefly before the break but the half ended 1-0 to Cerro-Largo.
The second half changed shape dramatically. Atlético Torque equalised in the 84th minute through Neilton da Silva, who tapped in after sustained pressure. And here's the thing — the game then turned on its head when Cerro-Largo's Alejandro Segovia picked up a second yellow card in the 75th minute. By then the visitors were down to ten men and had to chase the game instead of protecting their lead.
Obregon scored the winner in the 88th minute, finishing from close range after a cross from the right. The home side had been patient, waiting for the numerical advantage to tell. They switched off at a set piece earlier in the match but recovered once the red card changed the balance of play.
Atlético Torque dominated possession at 55 per cent and registered 108 attacks compared to 100 for the visitors. However, their efficiency was questionable — three shots on target yielded two goals while Cerro-Largo managed six shots on target for only one goal. The home side won 12 corners to five and had 27 throw-ins compared to 13.
The result leaves Atlético Torque on 44 points in fourth place from 25 games, while Cerro-Largo remain on 32 points after 26 matches. The home side had won their previous two league games before this victory, while the visitors had struggled for form with just one win in their last five matches.
