Avispa Fukuoka and Mito Hollyhock shared the spoils in a J-League 1 clash at Best Denki Stadium on Saturday, with the draw leaving both sides still searching for consistency at this stage of the season. The hosts took the lead through Shu Morooka in the 53rd minute, only for Yasuki Kimoto to equalise for the visitors eight minutes from time. It was a result that kept Avispa rooted to 16th place with four points from six games, while Mito moved up to 11th on nine points.
Things settled into a rhythm after the interval, with Morooka breaking the deadlock shortly after half-time. He was booked himself five minutes later, a sign of how tightly contested the middle of the pitch had become. Mito responded with fresh legs, bringing on Yu Funabashi in the 54th minute, but it took until the 86th minute for the visitors to finally find their way back into the game.
The home side pushed forward with intent, registering 99 attacks against Mito's 82, but could not convert their superiority into a second goal. Avispa created two big chances to Mito's one, yet their shot accuracy of 31 per cent meant they wasted opportunities. Mito, with 54 per cent possession, were more measured, completing 350 passes compared to the hosts' 293, but they needed that late strike to salvage something from the match.
There were plenty of bodies thrown into the mix as both managers turned to their benches. Avispa made four changes, including the double substitution of Kokoro Maeda and Teppei Oka in the 63rd minute, while Mito brought on three players in the 69th minute alone. The yellow cards told a story of frustration, with five booked in total across the second half.
Avispa had come into this fixture off a run of mixed results, including a 2-3 defeat to Urawa and a 1-2 loss to Kyoto Sangyo, but they showed resilience in keeping the game alive. Mito, meanwhile, had bounced back from a 0-2 setback with a 4-2 win over Kashima, and this point extended their unbeaten run to four matches. The draw means neither side has found a formula that works consistently yet.
