Spartak Moscow claimed a 2-1 victory over Baltika in the fourth match of the Premier League regular season on Saturday. The result leaves Spartak second in the table with 13 points from six games, while Baltika remain fifth on 10 points. Three goals decided the contest, with each side finding the net twice before Spartak's Pablo Solari settled the matter.
Manfred Ugalde gave Spartak the lead in the 20th minute, finishing a move that found space in the box. Baltika responded quickly, and Andrei Mendel equalised just three minutes later. The opening exchanges suggested a match that might end in a draw, and to be fair, the early pattern held for the first half hour.
Solari restored Spartak's advantage in the 49th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse that came after the interval. By then Baltika had grown frustrated, with Minqiyan Beveev collecting two yellow cards within a minute of each other. The home side pressed for an equaliser but Spartak's organisation held firm.
Discipline became an issue as the match progressed. Five yellow cards were shown in the 76th minute alone, including cards for Ugalde, Wooh, Fernandes, Titkov, and Anderson. An additional booking came in the 83rd minute. These interruptions broke the rhythm and let Spartak control the tempo through substitutions and time-wasting.
The statistics tell a story of uneven efficiency. Baltika dominated possession of the ball in terms of volume, completing 242 passes compared to Spartak's 481, but Spartak held 66 per cent of the play. Baltika registered nine shots against four on target, yet Spartak's four shots on target proved decisive. Expected goals favoured Baltika at 1.07 to 0.8, but big chances told a different tale — Spartak created two, Baltika none.
The result extends Spartak's position in the upper reaches of the table and leaves Baltika searching for consistency. The home side had won three of their previous six matches, including a 2-0 victory over Krylia Sovetov, but this defeat ends a run that had looked promising. Spartak now sit three points clear of third place, though the season is far from over.
