Match report

Paixão Snatch Victory in Montevideo

Paixão claimed a surprising 2-1 win over Cerrito in the second phase of the Uruguayan second division on Friday evening. The visitors from outside the capital came to Montevideo and held their nerve when it mattered most. Cerrito had taken the lead through A. Mendez in the eleventh minute, but two quick responses from Paixão turned the game on its head. To be fair, the visitors never looked comfortable, but they took their chances when they arrived.

The twenty-minute mark brought a shift you could feel without hearing a word. Just after that point, A. Schetino equalised for Paixão, and L. Lopez added the winner four minutes later. Cerrito had dominated possession at 70 per cent and registered 106 attacks, but the heat took the sting out of their superiority. By then, the home side had five shots on target to two, yet one mistake ends it in these games.

The statistics told a story of control without consequence. Cerrito enjoyed 106 attacks against 68 for the visitors, with four corners to none. The home side committed 22 free kicks and took 41 throw-ins, while Paixão managed only ten free kicks and 32 throw-ins. Five yellow cards for the away team suggested frustration mounting as the game progressed.

Cerrito arrived in seventh place with nine points from six matches, two wins, three draws, and a single loss. Their recent form had been mixed — a 2-0 defeat to Deportivo Maldonado on Tuesday, followed by a 1-2 loss to Sportivo Huracán. Paixão sat 11th with just four points, one win, one draw, and four defeats. They had ended their run with a 2-0 victory over Atenas and a 0-0 draw with River Plate.

The result moved Paixão closer to the middle of the table while Cerrito's hopes of a strong finish took another blow. Three goals in nineteen minutes decided a match where the visitors showed they could respond under pressure. The away end never stopped, but in the end, it was the visitors who celebrated.
