Neuchâtel Xamax took all three points away from Étoile Carouge with a 1:0 win in the Challenge League on Friday evening. M. Camara opened the scoring in the eighteenth minute and that was enough. The visitors sat deeper after the goal and refused to give anything away, even when the hosts threw bodies forward.
Étoile had the ball for most of the match but found no real answer. They completed 545 passes against 322 for the visitors, but possession without penetration is just noise. The home side registered 92 attacks but only three big chances, and their shots on target totalled seven from 28 attempts.
Neuchâtel kept it simple. They managed eight tackles and nine interceptions while Étoile completed four successful tackles and six interceptions. The visitors made more clearances, 28 to 17, which tells you where the danger lay. And here's the thing — they covered their ground well enough to protect a lead they didn't need to extend.
The yellow cards came thick and fast in the second half. L. Seydoux picked up his booking in the sixty-seventh minute, followed shortly by B. Diomande's substitution and J. Luthi's entry. E. Abedini was cautioned before the hour and a half mark, and T. Escorza went on the notebook just as the game was winding down.
Étoile Carouge remain sixth with nine points from seven games, three wins and two defeats. Neuchâtel are seventh, also on nine points but with three victories and four losses. The gap between them has barely moved, and by then it was clear this was a match decided in the first twenty minutes.
