KuPS Women secure vital victory over IF Gnistan in Championship Playoffs
KuPS Women saw off IF Gnistan 2-0 in the fourth round of the Championship Playoffs at their home ground on Friday evening. The result moves the hosts further clear of the lower half of the table while Gnistan's push for a higher finish takes another hit. Both sides entered the fixture knowing the stakes, with KuPS sitting third and Gnistan sixth in the standings.
Tuuli Viinikka broke the deadlock in the twenty-sixth minute, finishing a well-worked move to give the hosts the lead they needed. The goal came at a crucial stage of the first half, shifting momentum firmly in KuPS's favour. Gnistan responded with urgency but could not find an equaliser before the interval.
Gentjana Rochi doubled the advantage shortly after, heading home in the thirty-fourth minute to seal the outcome. The visitors looked increasingly isolated as the game progressed, unable to string together sustained periods of pressure. KuPS controlled the tempo and saw out the remainder without drama.
Several substitutions were made throughout the second half as both managers sought to influence the final minutes. KuPS brought on Antonia Pohjanoksa and Hilppa Tuomainen together at the restart, while Gnistan introduced P. Ukkonen and Hertta Laurinkoski in search of something. Catherine Jamie Rita came on late for the hosts, and Niitty Hahl received a yellow card in the eighty-second minute.
The victory extends KuPS's momentum in the playoffs, moving them five points clear of sixth place. Gnistan remain in a precarious position, needing results to climb away from the bottom half. The hosts have now won three of their last five matches, while the visitors have struggled to string together wins of late.
